摘要

The research described in this report focuses on potential of integrating the production of wood for energy into the existing forest products supply system. This system has proven capable of supplying the approximately 200 million tons of wood required annually by the lumber and pulp industry. Expanding and refining this system to include wood for energy offers the best promise for realizing the potential of the existing wood resource for energy in the immediate future. Discussion is presented under the headings: field drying; influence of moisture content and species; energy requirement for chipping; in-woods transport; in-woods processing; transportation; modeling of harvesting machines and systems; development of on in-situ stand generator for use in harvesting machine simulators; analysis of economic feasibility of harvesting forest residues for energy and the implications for forest management; in-plant receiving, storing, and preparation of woody fuels; and development of harvesting systems.
