The development of a biological membrane in which yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) are embedded in an artificial membrane by avidin-biotin binding such that each cell is exposed on both sides of the membrane is described. The purpose was to develop a means by which ethanol could be efficiently separated from fermenting biomass. (ERA citation 10:041449)
