Molten Salt Reactor for Dispersed Solid Phase Chlorination

A unique reactor system for the high-temperature (400 exp 0 C to 700 exp 0 C), batch chlorination of finely-divided, mixed metal oxides dispersed in a NaCl-AlCl sub 3 melt is described. Provisions are made for operation under an inert atmosphere and for sampling of the heterogeneous melt and of the mixed metal chloride vapor product stream. Application of the reactor system to mineral recovery from coal conversion solid wastes is underway. 10 references, 5 figures. (ERA citation 10:001791)
