Use of a Tandem Accelerator for Light Element Analysis

The Sandia EN tandem Van de Graaff accelerator is being utilized to depth profile light elements (H, D, He, Li, B, C) in a variety of materials. It is particularly useful in glass studies; e.g., hydration, H/D exchange, alkali-ion depletion and crystallization in ion-implanted glasses. These investigations are primarily carried out by elastic recoil detection (ERD) in combination with Rutherford backscattering (RBS) and are discussed as illustrative examples.
