The properties of point defects and the mechanisms of cation diffusion in NiO, CoO, and FeO are reviewed. The method of analysis and the results are presented in some detail for NiO to demonstrate how results from measurements of electrical conductivity, deviation from stoichiometry, tracer diffusion, and chemical diffusion may be used to obtain concentrations and mobilities of defects. The results of similar analyses are presented for CoO and FeO; these results demonstrate the importance of defect clustering and defect-defect interactions at large defect concentrations. 12 figures.
