The corrosion behavior of several structural ceramic materials was evaluated under laboratory controlled conditions as a step in assessing their compatibility with a coal gasification environment. Application of these materials in heat recovery systems is of interest. Several variables including material composition, exposure temperature, and the presence or absence of a coal slag coating were investigated. The results indicate that the silicon carbide ceramic materials included in this study perform very well in the absence of fused coal slag. The presence of molten slag at high temperature, however, resulted in some material degradation via surface reaction and penetration. 15 references, 5 figures, 4 tables. (ERA citation 09:048205)
