Production and Utilization of Monosomic Zea Mays in Cytogenetic Studies

A system has been found (the r-X1 system) which generates a high frequency of monosomics in Zea mays (maize). We have employed this system to produce several thousand monosomic maize plants including plants monosomic for nine, probably all ten of the maize chromosomes. This is the only series of its type that has been produced in any diploid form. This paper presents a general overview of this system and some of the ways the monosomics are being utilized in cytogenetic studies. 37 references, 1 table. (ERA citation 10:014546)
