In a series of Fe-base alloys, the importance of low temperature on the effective driving force for fatigue crack growth is delineated. It is shown that both a crack-opening stress intensity factor and an effective stress intensity factor contribute to threshold. Both factors increase substantially as test temperature is reduced from 300 to 123 sup 0 K. (ERA citation 12:011603)
