The spectrum of an ultrasonic signal backscattered from grain boundaries within a material depends not only on the characteristics of the individual scattering centers but also on the statistical distribution of the distances between neighboring scatterers. Changes in scatterer spacing can cause large changes in the ultrasonic backscatter signal and complicate the interpretation of the signal spectra. This paper illustrates these effects and gives some examples of representative scatterer spacing distributions encountered in the nondestructive estimation of grain size in metals.
