摘要

A primary goal of this research is to use x-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopy to characterize the active surfaces formed on iron catalysts during hydrocarbon synthesis. The first phase of the work involves characterization of reference compounds, to demonstrate how this technique can be used to distinguish between the various iron states likely to be present on the catalyst surfaces. To date, iron, oxygen, and carbon core level, iron Auger, and valence band spectra have been measured for a number of materials. These include clean metal foils, reduced metal powders, bulk Fe sub 3 O sub 4 and alpha -Fe sub 2 O sub 3 powders, oxide overlayers on iron foils, and carbided powders and foils. Results of these investigations are summarized. (ERA citation 10:006548)
