This is an interim technical progress report for US Department of Energy Cooperative Agreement No. FC05-77ET10069, EDS Coal Liquefaction Process Development, Phase V. Funding is shared by US Department of Energy, Exxon Company, USA (a division of Exxon Corporation), Electric Power Research Institute, Japan Coal Liquefaction Development Company, Phillips Coal Company, Anaconda Minerals Company, Ruhrkohle A.G., and ENI. This agreement covers the period January 1, 1977 through December 31, 1985. This interim report documents work carried out by Combustion Engineering, Inc. under a contract to Exxon Research and Engineering Company and was prepared by Combustion Engineering, Inc. This report is the third of four by Combustion Engineering, Inc. on the development phase of the Hybrid Boiler program. This volume documents the results of studies in a one-sixteenth scale, three dimensional, isothermal, air flow model to ensure adequate gas distribution entering and through the process heater coals situated in the back pass of a hybrid boiler and in a computer model to evaluate the process coils thermal performance. 5 references, 37 figures, 3 tables.
