Quarterly Reports Nos. 1 and 2 included results from six tube furnace experiments, two of which involved K sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite reactions, and four of which were with Na sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite mixtures. Results from simultaneous quadrupole mass spectrometric-microgravimetric analyses of vapor from K sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite reactions were also reported, with preliminary results for similar experiments involving Na sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite reactions in the range 725 to 950 exp 0 C. It was pointed out that in the latter work, no Na exp + (g) had been observed, nor had any Na-bearing species been identified among the vapors from the reaction of Na sub 2 SO sub 4 with graphite. In this communication (Quarterly Report No. 3) we discuss the x-ray powder diffraction (XPD) and characteristic x-ray fluorescence results from new tube furnace experiments, one configuration involving mixtures of Na sub 2 SO sub 4 to K sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite and in the other mixtures of K sub 2 CO sub 3 -graphite (both with iron (III) sulfate films as targets for the impacting alkali atoms). Simultaneous quadrupole mass spectrometric-microgravimetric experiments have been extended to 1200 exp 0 C for Na sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite mixtures. Rates-of-effusion data are reported for the first time for the Na sub 2 SO sub 4 -graphite reaction, and some clarification is provided regarding the behavior of Na(g) in these reactions. 2 figures, 3 tables.
