Recent investigations of inherently-safe High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTR) have focused upon small-core concepts that do not have active emergency core cooling systems. Two such core concepts are the solid-block core (SBC), similar to Fort St. Vrain core, and the pebble-bed core (PBC) under development in West Germany. The purpose of this paper is to present a comparison of the heat transfer mechanisms during a depressurized loss-of-forced-circulation heatup transient in these two core types.
