Canadian energy policy underwent a major evolution during the past year. The regulated environment which had been in place for oil pricing and marketing since 1973 and the onerous tax burden of the National Energy Program gave way to a more market-oriented system with more equitable taxation. As a result the oil and gas industry's recovery was enhanced, and industry activity improved to levels close to those prevailing before the National Energy Program. The dismantling of the National Energy Program which began in September 1981 was completed with the conclusion of the Western Energy Accord in March 1985. (ERA citation 12:009264)
