The Brazilian natural pink tourmaline is studied through the polarized optical absorption measurements. The effect of increasing doses of gamma -rays from sup 60 Co in the spectra were determined (maximum of 20MGy). The following optical absorption bands were observed: 8,500 and 14,800 cm sup -1 assigned to d-d transitions of Fe sup 2+ in b- and c-sites, respectively; 19,500 and 25,500 cm sup -1 assigned to sup 5 E implies sup 5 A sub 1 and sup 5 B sub 2 implies sup 5 A sub 1 d-d transitions of Mn sup 3+ , respectively.
