Automated Ion Chromatographic Analysis of Plating Solutions

Ion chromatography is an analytical technique that is capable of rapid, multi-component analysis of a variety of samples. The method is based on chromatographic separation of the various components followed by detection using any of three available detectors. Three general types of columns are used: anion exchange, cation exchange, and nonpolar. Conductivity, electrochemical, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) detectors can be used with any of the columns. This provides the analyst with sufficient versatility to analyze the complex mixtures present in many plating baths. It is especially useful to employ automation to provide maximum efficiency in analysis time. The analyses required most frequently must be outlined so that the appropriate columns and detectors can be properly installed. This paper will describe the basic principles of ion chromatography and will list the columns and detectors required for analyzing different plating solutions so that the individual analysts can optimize thier systems. 15 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
