摘要

The long range goal of this research project has been to obtain information on the atomic structure of grain boundaries in bcc metals and ceramics, to understand how segregation influences grain boundary structure and causes boundaries to become embrittled in Fe-base alloys, to understand how segregation and the ionization state of the solute influences the boundary structure in ceramic materials, and to study faceting and the frequency of its occurrence in ceramic materials. Electron microscopy and electron diffraction techniques were used to carry out the studies on grain boundaries. The research progress made during the support period of the contract is reviewed.
