Through the introduction of pyrolysis-gas chromatography, an important expansion of the range of application of gas chromatography to include low-volatile or non-volatile organic compounds has been attained. In this method, a macromolecule is broken down through heating into relatively low-molecular compounds, which can then be separated by common gas chromatographic analysis. The resulting gas chromatograms, or better pyrograms, are characteristic in appearance of the original substance. The original substance can thus be identified like with a fingerprint. The precondition for this method is of course the existence of reference pyrograms that have been made under identical conditions. Through the combining of gas chromatography with mass spectrometry, direct identification of the products of pyrolysis and thus of the individual building blocks of the macromolecule is possible. These techniques of analysis are applied to low-volatile water constituents to investigate the possibility of identifying lignosulfonic acid, its salts and humic acid.
