Introduction to String Field Theory. A Pedestrian Approach to the Covariant Formulation

A relatively elementary account is given of what a string field represents and what is involved in the construction of its covariant action. Emphasis is on drawing a correspondence with similar problems in ordinary field theory and, particularly, using the language and mathematics used in ordinary field theory.
