The results of an experimental and theoretical investigation are presented in this report. The purpose of the investigation was to compare various methods of utilizing methanol as a fuel for reciprocating piston type internal combustion engines. Three different methods of fuel preparation were analyzed. The three methods of fuel preparation were: (1) methanol dissociation with waste heat prior to entering intake manifold; (2) methanol vaporization with waste heat prior to entering intake manifold; and (3) methanol vaporization with waste heat within the cylinder during the compression stroke. The results of the investigation are presented as miles per gallon of methanol for the three fueling methods. 5 refs., 5 figs., 5 tabs. (ERA citation 11:011488)
