The interaction was studied using thermal gradient and vacuum techniques. The generation of hydrogen iodide was inhibited but not completely prevented by the presence of cesium hydroxide. The volatility of boric acid was greatly increased in a steam atmosphere and this prevented co-condensation with cesium iodide and therefore reactions involving condensed boric acid were less significant. The implications of such reactions to generate volatile iodine species from cesium iodide are discussed with reference to specific hypothetical severe accident sequences in PWRs.
