Investigation of Selected Topics in Structural Control Technology

This report summarizes results of an integrated structure-control research project in three areas: integrated simulation, modeling technique, and decentralized control design. We developed a computer simulation procedure and demonstrated its applicability to the evaluation of controller design by a couple of examples. We developed a computer code for the extraction of Lanczos modes. We applied the Lanczos transformation to the solution of classical real and complex eigenvalues and eigenvectors which are commonly used in the normal mode model reduction method. We derived a theory to adopt Lanczos coordinates as generalized coordinates in the component mode synthesis technique as an effective modeling scheme for complex structural systems. The theory was illustrated by a simple two-component structural system. Finally, we developed a powerful algorithm and demonstrated its application by an example for controller design based on an optimal decentralized control theory. For future research, we plan to focus on improvements in all three research areas to enhance the applicability of the results to large scale structural systems. (ERA citation 12:008433)
