The report summarizes network operations and related research performed by the Geological Survey of Alabama and Georgia Institute of Technology, and describes special studies of crustal thickness in southeastern Tennessee and of the North-Georgia earthquake of October 9, 1984. Travel times from deep-focus events and refraction based on quarry blasts were used to study crustal velocity. Data indicate a coherent velocity structure for the granitic crust in the southeastern U.S. Refraction velocities and separate solutions for location and depth were used to improve travel-time calculations and hypocenter locations.
