Investigation of the Single Clinch Sleeve Tube Fitting

Both computational and experimental methods have been applied in assessing techniques for assembling clinch sleeve fittings on 3.18 mm (1/8 in.) OD tubing. Stress levels and plastic deformations were predicted by numerical analysis. The effects of lubrication and torquing speed were determined experimentally. Torque versus nut rotation relationships obtained by numerical methods correlated well with experimental results, leading to a series of detailed recommendations for assembling and tightening the fittings. The results also indicate that clinch sleeve fittings should be able to seal against pressures as great as 207 MPa (30 ksi) with a safety factor of 1.5. (ERA citation 12:004574)
