The study was designed to demonstrate the capabilities of a new airborne lidar sensor for mapping tracer gas distributions as a means of obtaining the necessary model development and validation data, and to provide a real-time method for evaluating distributions of radioactive materials following an accidental release. The Airborne Lidar Agent, Remote Monitor (ALARM) uses two downward-pointing, high-energy (1 J), line-tunable CO2 lasers operating in the 9- to 11-micrometer wavelength region. A field demonstration of the ALARM capabilities for measurement of SF6 was designed and conducted with geometries and conditions similar to those that might occur in the event of an accidental radioactive gas release. Data examples of cross-plume column-content and altitude-resolved SF6 distributions are presented. The results indicate a column content detection of 2ppb-km, depending on the uniformity of surface differential reflectivity between ALARM wavelengths. Recommendations are given for needed ALARM technique improvements.
