Presented here are the experimentally determined radiation fields of focussed and unfocussed piston tranducers radiating through both planar and cylindrical liquid-solid interfaces at both normal and non-normal incidences. Comparisons are made with the fields predicted by the Gaussian and Gaussian-Hermite theories. The theories are shown to work well within the limits of the assumptions made and within the range of the cases studied. Also presented is a comparison of experimentally determined probability of detection (POD) curves with those predicted by a POD theory which utilizes the Gaussian beam theory.
