Complex carbohydrates can no longer be relegated to ''mere'' structural or energy-storage roles in living organisms. This work has clearly demonstrated that oligosaccharide fragments of plant and fungal cell walls, display biological regulatory activities. The regulatory activities are specific and reproducible; oligosaccharides from fungi and plants have been shown to individually and synergistically elicit phytoalexins (antibiotics) in several species, as well as to elicit a plant hypersensitive-like response. Oligosaccharines have been shown to change the sex of flowers that are formed in a dioecious plant and to control morphogenesis in a tobacco explant system. 2 tabs. (ERA citation 11:005572)
