Acute Oral Toxicity in Rats with P-tert-butyl Benzoic Acid with Cover Letter dated 08/21/1986

Acute oral toxicity was evaluated in groups of 10 male Sprague-Dawley albino rats administered single doses of p-tert-butyl benzoic acid by oral gavage at levels of 0.72 g/kg body weight in NaOH/HCl (pH 8.0) (group A), or 0.70 g/kg body weight in acetone/DMSO (group B). Mortality was observed in 2 animals in group A, and in 7 animals in group B. Clinical observations in group A included hypoactivity, ataxia, bradypnea, yellow-stained abdomen, and impaired use of front limbs. Clinical observations in group B included hypoactivity, ataxia, bradypnea, no pain reflex, possible respiratory congestion, prostration, yellow-stained anal area, lacrimation, and hypothermia.
