This procedure is designed for use in the determination of copper (Cu) in FMPC water effluents. The water is sampled specifically to meet US EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance requirements. Sampling locations include the Clearwell and Tank 9. Trace amounts of Cu are present in the water samples along with other trace impurities, and approximately 1000 mg L (sup -1) sodium and 500 mg L (sup -1) calcium. The optimum concentration range is 0.005 to 0.100 mg L (sup -1) with a detection limit of 0.001 mg L (sup -1) Cu. The analytical range may be extended by dilution. Time required for a single analysis is 30 minutes to one hour. The following elements are reported to not interfere at the indicated concentration in mg L (sup -1): lead, cadmium, and zinc (10,000); sulfate, sodium, and potassium (9000); magnesium (4000); nitrate (2000); calcium (1000). Concurrent analysis of spiked samples is utilized to verify the absence of interference. (ERA citation 13:043578)
