摘要

Total fruit and tree nut production, at 29.5 million tons, was down 2 percent between 2006 and 2007 and the lowest since 1991. An 11-percent smaller citrus crop offset a 1-percent bigger noncitrus crop and a 25-percent bigger tree nut crop. The value of the 2007 fruit and tree nut crops reached a record high of $18.5 billion, 9 percent above 2006. The citrus crop was valued at $3.1 billion, noncitrus at $11.4 billion, and tree nuts at almost $4.0 billion. Returns were up for citrus, noncitrus, and tree nut production, with new record-high values for citrus and noncitrus fruit. U.S. fruit consumption averaged 270.9 pounds per person (fresh-weight equivalent) in 2007, down 2 percent from 2006 and 4 percent from 2005. Americans consumed fewer citrus and noncitrus fruit products in 2007, but increased their consumption of tree nuts. Consumption increased only for canned fruit, decreasing for fresh, frozen and dried fruit, as well as fruit juices. Tree nut consumption remained unchanged at 3.3 pounds per person (shelled basis) in 2007/08. Americans consumed more almonds, pistachios, and other nuts - mostly imports such as cashews, Brazil nuts, and pine nuts - but fewer hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, and macadamia nuts.
