Equivalence of Wrought and Cast Stainless Steel Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Canisters.

A multi-site study concluded that DWPF canisters with cylindrical surfaces made of centrifugally cast Type 304L stainless steel are equivalent in metallurgical properties, including corrosion resistance, to the reference wrought stainless. The top and bottom of the cast canisters are wrought stainless, identical to the reference canisters. Both passed drop tests. These results indicate that the composite canister meets all process and storage criteria as well as the reference canister. The fabrication choice may be based on cost. 5 refs., 5 tabs.
