Effects of Complex Organic Mixtures of Coal Liquid on Cardiovascular Function in the Rat

The authors evaluated the effects of high-boiling coal liquids on the rat cardiovascular system. In two studies, rats were exposed to coal-derived heavy distillate (HD), via inhalation, for 6 hr per day, 5 days per wk for 6 wk. The HD produced high blood pressure, without affecting electrocardiogram patterns, in rats exposed to air concentrations of 0.7 mg/L and 0.24 mg/L. After 6 wk recovery, blood pressure was not statistically different among groups. The authors also observed significant changes in other cardiovascular measurements, including increases in plasma volume, blood volume, blood PCO sub 2 , plasma cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein, and decreases in plasma angiotensin levels. In a third study, blood pressures of rats exposed to HD were elevated after dermal application, but not after gavage. 14 refs., 9 figs., 1 tab. (ERA citation 12:042282)
