Chelating Extractants of Improved Selectivity: Final Report

The research under this grant was directed towards the development of selective lanthanide (and, by analogy, of actinide) extractants. A series of twenty chelating extractants, including members of the 8-quinolinol, aryl hydroxamic acid, acylpyrazolone, pyridylazophenols and acidic phosphorus families, coupled with nine adductants, i.e., neutral auxiliary ligands with either O or N bonding atoms, and two quaternary ammonium ion pairing agents were synthesized or obtained, and their equilibrium extraction behavior with La sup 3+ , Pr sup 3+ , Eu sup 3+ , Ho sup 3+ , and Yb sup 3+ as representative Ln sup 3+ was investigated. This work, involving over 200 equilibrium systems, significantly enlarged the data base of Ln sup 3+ extraction, yielded a number of useful correlations of structure and selectivity, and provided guidelines for further reagent design.
