Approaches to evaluate the strength of external insulation exposed to lightning overvoltages can be grouped into: physical approaches, which, in their general form, evaluate the time to breakdown for a given applied voltage as the sum of the times necessary for the development of the various phenomena involved in the discharge; integration methods, which consider the time integral of the difference between the applied and fixed voltages. From an analysis of the results of systematic tests conducted on rod plane, rod rod and conductor structure configurations, with clearances from 2 to 4 meters, it was concluded that the integration methods are generally less accurate than the use of physical models, the only approach which takes into account the interaction between test circuit and test object.
