Preparation and Certification of IAEA gamma-Ray Spectrometry Reference Materials RGU-1, RGTh-1 and RGK-1

The IAEA noted a requirement for materials specifically designed for use in calibrating laboratory gamma-ray spectrometers used for the analysis of geological and uranium exploration samples. Following the recommendations of the Consultants' Group, arrangements were made with the CANMET, to undertake the preparation of a thorium and a uranium reference material to serve as IAEA AQCS certified reference materials. The result was the completion of RGU-1 and RGTh-1, which together with RGK-1, prepared by the AQCS, form a set of three materials for the calibration of laboratory gamma-ray spectrometers for potassium, uranium and thorium.
