Three types of the internal tin processed alloy (Ti and Ta) Nb sub 3 Sn wires were studied for critical current densities J/sub c/ in a magnetic field range of 8 to 24 T at 4.2 deg K. In general, there was no consistent correlation between the values of J/sub c/ and the alloying element nor the filament size. However, it was shown that a very high current density (e.g., J/sub c/ = 350 A/mm sup 2 ) can be achieved if the transition to the normal state is very abrupt, i.e., n > 40 at H = 16 T. 15 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.
