Eternal Triangle: Author, Editor, Reader

Once upon a time, to paraphrase Kipling, there was an author and his reader and a Tertium Quid. The third party of ambiguous status in this triangle is the editor. The relationship between author and editor, which has been widely examined, can be marked by closeness and cooperation or by distance and confrontation. The less obvious relationship between editor and reader can be marked by concern and appreciation or by indifference and scorn. Editors who are sensitive to these relationships can use their ambiguous status to serve the needs of both readers and authors; this strengthens both the communication process and the editor's position in it.
