Process for Environmentally Safe Disposal of the Noble Gas Isotope Krypton 85.

This report describes a process for environmentally safe disposal of the noble gas isotope krypton 85, in which the noble gases krypton and xenon formed in nuclear reactions are separated from one another. A reduction in the Kr-85 release to the atmosphere after fuel reprocessing could be achieved by retention for decay purposes in storage containers or by storage of the fuel elements before reprocessing. Because of the long half time of T/sub 1/2/ = 10.76 yrs, this would require decade-long storage periods. The invention is based on the problem of developing a process by which the isotope krypton 85 formed in nuclear facilities can be disposed of, the radiation exposure to the population diminished, and the expense required for this purpose significantly reduced.
