The fabrication of high-efficiency crystalline-silicon solar cells involves the use of hazardous chemicals which must be handled carefully and disposed of properly. This can be done in a facility that has been designed to minimize the probability of having an accident and which mitigates the damage of those that do occur. An analysis of such safety features is presented here for a facility designed to fabricate crystalline-silicon solar cells of the types shown to exhibit record-high efficiencies, both under concentrated and one-sun illumination. For comparison, the analogous safety measures that need to be taken in a thin-film solar cell production facility are also noted. This contrast reveals the inherently safer nature of crystalline-silicon solar cell processing, and consequently, its lower safety-related costs. 19 refs., 1 fig. (ERA citation 14:001089)
