Accurate and reliable electromagnetic modeling codes, which may be specific or general purpose, help Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory carry out its research. However, a need for a three-dimensional coded prompted the development of a finite element code. MAXWELL3 is a general electromagnetic modeling code (solves the differential Maxwell equations in the time domain) allows arbitrary geometrical shapes for simulation regions. The finite element technique was chosen over the finite difference technique because of the boundary-conforming discretization of the former. This paper focuses on some of the techniques used to make 3D finite elements tractable in electromagnetics. Sample models are presented to illustrate some of the effects certain techniques, e.g., a free space boundary, have on the solution. 4 refs., 3 figs. (ERA citation 14:023754)
