Calculation of Oxidation Rates for Iron in CO-CO2

A new method is proposed for calculating the oxidation of iron in the presence of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It is assumed that the oxidation is limited by an internal oxidation step. The calculational method, based on methods previously used to calculate the hydriding of uranium, uses no parameters for the calculation. The known oxygen solubility and diffusivity in iron along with the precipitation rate constants, all of which are obtainable from the literature, are used to make the calculation. The calculation is in good agreement with the rates of oxidation observed, which would seem to validate the method. 13 refs. (ERA citation 13:030564)
