摘要

A program of intensive monitoring of air chemistry and supporting meteorological and surface variables is now under way at a small network of carefully selected research sites. These ''CORE'' sites are being used to test and evaluate new dry deposition measurement techniques and are also intended to provide a foundation for later expanded measurement programs. Currently at each CORE site, hour-by-hour measurements are made of the atmospheric parameters necessary to infer dry deposition rates using the inferential (or ''concentration monitoring'') approach. Tests are conducted of new simplified techniques presently under development for broadscale deployment in routine monitoring programs. In addition, periodic intensive and comparative studies of dry deposition are conducted, coupling the facilities of the host institution with those of collaborating laboratories. The initial CORE network consists of three sites: Argonne, Illinois; State College, Pennsylvania; and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. As a specific example of the research being conducted, details are given of a May 1983 multilaboratory investigation of pollution fluxes and flux divergences at Oak Ridge. The results indicate that eddy-correlation determinations of deposition velocities are susceptible to errors of the order of, but probably not exceeding, 0.05 cm s/sup /minus/1/ provided that standard site-homogeneity and time-stationarity guidelines are satisfied. 15 refs., 12 figs.
