Status of DOE (Department of Energy) Sponsored Advanced Coal Cleaning Processes.

The overall goal of the US Department of Energy (DOE's) Coal Preparation Program is to provide the base that industry can utilize to produce clean-coal products as market conditions warrant. The major objectives of the Coal Preparation Program are outlined. Discussion is based on the division of the program into two broad groups: physical, and chemical/biological beneficiation. Physical beneficiation projects include the following: advanced froth flotation, selective agglomeration, heavy liquid cycloning, and electrostatic processes. The chemical/biological beneficiation projects include the molten-caustic leaching process (chemical), and the identification, isolation, and production of specific bacterial strains (biological). Details of various projects with current activity and comparison among each group are discussed. Ancillary operations though forming a significant part of DOE's Coal Preparation Program are not included. 53 refs., 17 figs., 17 tabs. (ERA citation 14:023952)
