In the enlarged superfluid model (ESM), recently proposed, by including an adequate four-nucleon interaction in addition to the pairing effective residual interaction, global correlations between proton and neutron fluids other than two-nucleon pairing and long-range correlations in atomic nuclei are induced. Among the new effects that the ESM can explain, good results can be obtained for the odd-even staggering of the charge radii of isotopes of one element. (author). 32 refs, 1 fig., 2 tabs.
