System coupling and effects optimization.

In this report some approaches have been suggested for dealing with the system coupling problem through their back doors. One approach is to synthesize the whole solution form the its parts, which can be approximately calculated individually--the so-called decomposition approach. The critical parameter in this approach is the Q-factor of the loaded cavity, the approach to determining which is yet to be found. The concepts of zeros and poles has also been put forward to simplify the picture of system back-door coupling, especially for sources with a few frequency parameters, such as carrier frequency, bandwidth and modulation frequency. The parameters in this approach are the poles and residues. One may be able to guess the locations of a few important poles. The residues, on the other hand, are difficult to estimate. Perhaps a statistical and empirical treatment is needed. The problem of effects optimization has been formulated in terms of minimizing the on-target fluence (or power density) required for a probability of effects equal to or greater than a prescribed value. The approach depends critically on the output of the assessment of the target of interest. 7 refs., 15 figs., 1 tab.
