We have demonstrated the feasibility of using thermographic phosphors as the temperature sensors in an optical surface-heat-flux gauge. A heat flux of 40 kW/sq m was measured with a gauge constructed by depositing La2O2 S:Eu and Gd2O2 S:Tb phosphors on the two faces of a polymethylpentene insulator. In the experiment, we measured a steady-state heat flux at a single point on a stationary surface; however, the gauge is also intended to measure transient heat flow. The technique is conceptually expandable to a two-dimensional temperature measurement. 17 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab. (ERA citation 14:011684)
