The University of Alabama has an established commitment to assist in the prudent development of the state's natural resources. The State School of Mines, which was established by legislation, was expanded and designated the School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED) in 1977. SOMED has the functional responsibility for the planning, coordination, and support of mineral and energy related research at the University through the various schools and colleges, the Natural Resources Center, and the Mineral Resources Institute. SOMED also supports faculty research through a grants program and undergraduate and graduate research and education in scholarships, fellowships, and grants. in the past 12 years, SOMED has been successful in carrying out its mission. SOMED programs are briefly outlined.
