Diffusion into coals is of considerable technological importance since many coal modification processes, such as direct liquefaction, desulfurization, demineralization, and chemical modification, involve diffusion of liquids or gases into the coal. The rate of reactants diffusing into the particles is often the rate-limiting step. Two different dynamic swelling studies were performed to elucidate the phenomenological and mechanistic analyses of swelling. The first method is the dynamic swelling desiccator studies which consist of high penetrant activity vapor swelling studies. The second method is the thermogravimetric analyzer studies which consists of low penetrant activity vapor swelling studies. The penetrant activity for chloroform, pyridine, and N,N-dimethylformamide were investigated. 8 refs., 34 figs., 11 tabs.
