This paper used in conjunction with classroom discussion is intended to provide the junior scientific glassblower with a fundamental understanding of the terminology and tools relative to high vacuum generation, measurement, and maintenance in the laboratory. Topics covered include vacuum gauges, mechanical vacuum pumps, diffusion pumps, vacuum system design, and elementary leak detection. 6 refs.
