Initial experiments with a myoelectric-based muscle sensor

This paper describes initial experiments in which a myoelectric-based sensor is used to measure local muscle activity in the human body -- specifically the hand muscles. Applications of this sensor are twofold: (1) to quantify the voluntary muscular activity of specific muscles for human factors studies and (2) to allow a human operator to control a mechanical hand in teleoperation mode. Discussions are focused mainly on the measurement of muscle activity and how it relates to controlling a mechanical hand. Supportive experimental results are given. 25 refs.
